San Pantaleo Italy

San Pantaleo is a district of the town of Olbia, in the province of Sassari. It sits high in the Cugnana massif, overlooking the Costa Smeralda. Founded in the early 19th century around a small estate, it saw significant population growth in 1894, when Bishop Antonio Contini of Ampurias and Tempio granted it parish status. Formerly part of Nuchis, it became a hamlet of Terranova Pausania in 1939, when that municipality was merged into Tempio Pausania and, in the same year, renamed Olbia. In recent decades, thanks to the tourist development of the Costa Smeralda, San Pantaleo has undergone strong demographic and urban growth, which has radically altered its original character. A committee campaigning for local autonomy has been active in San Pantaleo for years. In August 1989, 13 people lost their lives in a violent fire.
