San Pantaleo Italy

San Pantaleo is a hamlet of the town of Olbia, in the province of Sassari, set high in the Cugnana mountain range, overlooking the Costa Smeralda. Founded in the early nineteenth century around a small manor house, it experienced significant population growth in 1894 after the parish was granted by Antonio Contini, bishop of Ampurias and Tempio. Formerly a hamlet of Nuchis, in 1939—when that municipality was merged into Tempio Pausania—it became a district of Terranova Pausania, which in the same year was renamed Olbia. In recent decades, with the tourist development of the Costa Smeralda, San Pantaleo has undergone continuous demographic and urban expansion, radically transforming its original appearance. A pro-autonomy committee has been active in San Pantaleo for years. In August 1989, 13 people died in a violent fire.
